Whales Breach in English Bay, Vancouver, B.C.
It is an unexpected and thrilling occurrence to see whales breach and a frightening sight if you are in a kayak at the same time. This is exactly what happened in English Bay, Vancouver, B.C., Canada when whales were seen breaching in the same area as local kayakers.
Captain Michael Sack was near the area and one of his passengers was shooting a video of the scene. According to that report, a whale weighing 50,000 to 80,000 pounds breached and landed on kayakers.
A female passenger shouted, “Where is the kayak?” Other passengers kept on cheering. After the accident the kayakers were found and guided safely back to the shore. Captain Sack further stated that the two people were lucky they were not crushed by direct contact with the whale’s body.
This was really a very bad incident in which frightened all the kayakers in the area. English Bay is a popular piece of water used by many people for recreational purposes, such as kayaking, canoeing, sailing, and boarding. The incident has certainly highlighted the danger that whales of any size can pose to people regardless of the size of the water craft you happen to be using.
